The violent rhetoric about who has a right to inhabit spaces within versus without United States borders presumes unexamined monolithic categories of citizen and alien, crowding and space. In a 2025 performance design critique of the contemporary dialectic of belonging and exclusion, the artists assembled objects and interacted with the remnants of countless immigrant lives to re-situate the alien child as a fully qualified life. By unpacking the actual belonging left behind by those children forced to “self-deport,” (ironically rendered agents without agency by the sovereign state), the performance space itself becomes testimony.
